Different Techniques for Effective Stress and Anxiety Management
There are a variety of ways and techniques that you can utilize to competently handle stress and anxiety
management. You may be required to use a number of them, however, in order to effectively address all the effects
of stress and anxiety on your life.
BEHAVIORAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS
Stress and anxiety may be caused by certain abnormal behaviors such as phobia or environmental factors like job
situations or family problems.
Direct Confrontation – If you are experiencing phobia or post-traumatic depression (PTD) and this is what’s
causing you to feel extreme stress and anxiety at certain instances, the best way to get rid of it is directly
confronting your fears. Take one step at a time however in conquering your fears and don’t go for the shock
treatment. If you have a fear of darkness, for instance, start by asking someone to accompany you in a dark room
for several minutes each day. Do not start self-treatment by locking yourself alone in a dark room as you may pass
out and have no one to give you proper medical attention.
Other ways of combating this aspect of stress and anxiety is by analyzing your situation, knowing what the
causes are, avoiding those causes and seeking other people’s support if necessary.
EMOTIONAL EFFECTS
Relax – Some people just don’t know how to relax, unbelievably as that may sound. They can’t seem to stop their
minds from worrying incessantly. Obviously, a person needs to know when it’s time to take a break if he wants to
successfully manage stress and anxiety.
Channeling – Whenever you’re feeling hyperactive because of stress and anxiety, use that to your advantage by
challenging yourself to accomplish tasks that were previously insurmountable.
Opening Emotional Floodgates – Perhaps all you really need is to let off steam. In Japan, for instance, stress
management facilities allow people to break vases and other fragile objects in one room in order to vent their
anger.
Other ways to cope with the emotional effects of stress and anxiety is by talking to yourself to stay calm or
desensitization.
ADDRESSING INSECURITY
Sometimes, the only reason why a person is feeling stressed and anxious is because he feels incompetent and
insecure. Obviously, the only way to feel better and eradicate stress and anxiety from one’s life is to find ways
to increase self-confidence. Learning, say, new skills and abilities are a great way to increase self-esteem.
COGNITIVE EFFORTS TO BATTLE STRESS AND ANXIETY
Role Model – Find a person whom you can look up to and treat as a role model then copy the way he or she handles
his fears and problems in life.
Faulty Thinking – Could it be that your present way of perceiving things is what’s causing you to feel more than
the usual amount of stress and anxiety?
Intentional Planning – Try tackling the problem of stress and anxiety as if it were a simple problem that can be
easily solved by logic and deliberate and careful planning.
Positive Attitudes – Think along the lines of “hope for the best but prepare for the worst” or “the glass is
half-full rather than half-empty”. Positive thinking still counts!
Believe in Yourself – Never let anyone damage your confidence on your own capabilities. Trust in yourself!
OTHER FACTORS
If none of what’s discussed above works, you may have to look deeper within or further back in order to effectively
manage stress and anxiety. Check your family’s medical history and see if there are genetic causes for your stress
levels or read psychological books that deal with stress and anxiety management and see which situations are
similar to yours.
